Most experts say mild to moderate exercise is fine if you pass the “neck check,” which means that your symptoms are above the neck (for example, a runny nose or a sore throat). Having symptoms that involve other areas of the body-fever, extreme tiredness, muscle aches, and swollen lymph glands- indicates that you need to take it easy. “Bed rest and a gradual progression back to normal workouts are recommended,” says David C. Nieman, a professor of health science at Appalachian State University in Boone, NC.

About Rafaela Montanaro:

Rafaela is from São Paulo, Brazil. She started in gymnastics at the age of 3, and quit at 12. Soon after she began studying classical ballet, jazz and modern dance. At the age of 16, she joined the circus where she trained mostly in hand balancing. When she was 17, she started training in kung-fu, and made the national team in 2006.
In 2008 she graduated from college with a Physical Education masters degree.
She started poling at the beginning of 2009, and since then received many titles including:

• Pole Fit Champion at IPC 2012
• 5th Place at Pole Art 2012
• 2nd Place at Pole World Cup 2011

Tell us about your Work It experience:  I got into pole by taking an intro class at work it dance and fitness October 2011, I saw videos of a friend doing it online and though it would be something I would enjoy. It seemed like a very fun way to get in shape. After my first class I was instantly hooked and could not get enough of it.
For me, pole has given me confidence and motivation I never thought I would have. I always strive to get better and learn new tricks and the pole community is the most supportive environment I’ve ever been apart of. I’m currently in the best shape of my life because of pole. I had to stop taking classes to get knee surgery and had a 4 month recovery period, which caused me to gain a lot of weight. In the past 4 months I lost 20 pounds with pole fitness being my only workout.
I have perform at the Sono Arts Festival, a student showcase in Vernon, and recently I performed up in Boston at the Supershag Invitational Championships. I plan on performing another showcase in Vernon and the CT Pole Showcase this winter.

ABOUT CORY MURPHY

Cory started his studies in modern dance while in his ninth grade year of high school.  Growing up in Fayetteville, NC, Cory studied under two highly skilled dance instructors: Asha Bala, a well trained modern dance and Indian Bharatanatyam instructor and Charlene Cox a well known Modern, Jazz and  African instructor.Cory’s skills include West African, Modern, Hip-Hop and Jazz dance styles. He has taught in various workshops and performed in different venues throughout out the east coast and the mid west.

The highly anticipated 3rd annual event of the American Pole Fitness Championships will take place live at the Manhattan Center, New York City, October 12, 2012 at 630pm. Door/Red carpet will open at 5pm. Men and women will compete for their individual gender division for the coveted title. The championships will be divided into 2 parts this year, –Elite and Masters Division.

The Masters Division is to be judged by APFA’s carefully selected esteemed individuals from around the world in pole sport who will award the coveted American Pole Fitness Champion titles to a male and female respectively at the theater after a live performance. These judges include:

Client Spotlight!

Paula JadeThis months client spotlight is on Paula D!

Paula has been part of the Work It family of clients for a little over 1 1/2 years.  She spends her days as an Office manager / Executive Assistant and her nights practicing her passion, pole fitness.  Paula was not a dancer, gymnast, or an acrobat growing up.  Her only dance experience was when she decided to take up Salsa dancing, which she did for a short time before discovering pole.

“I wanted to do something fun.  I tried to gather a few of my friends together to take a pole class with me.  When they all decided not to go, I decided to go by myself.”  Paula caught the “pole bug” and has been practicing her art ever since.

I had the pleasure of watching Paula’s development over the past year, mentally and physically.  She has become very strong, very confident, and a beautiful dancer.  She progressed so well, she performed in behalf of Work It at the SoNo Arts Festival.
